About Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs is a city in the state of Colorado that is situated on the east-central region of this state. It is nearby to the Pikes Peak Mountain, which is numbered among the United States’ most historically famous mountains. Colorado Springs is about 60 miles away from the City of Denver, on the latter’s Southern end.

History

The Ute, Cheyenne and Arapaho Amerindian tribes were the very first inhabitants of the future site of Colorado Springs. In the early 19th century, 1810 to be more specific, a portion of this land was included in the ‘Louisiana Purchase,’ and was designated as ‘Kansas Territory’ in 1854. Five years later, the city was formally organized at the Front Range convergence of the Fountain Creek and Camp Creek. A few years later, Colorado City was made the capital of the ‘Colorado Territory’ until 1862, when Denver City ultimately supplanted it.
 
In the WWII, the USAAF took land here and made it the Peterson Field. This would become one of the many military installations in and around the Colorado Springs during the 2nd Great War. The mid 20th Century witnessed a continued military expansion in the city. Some of the most notable military facilities, which were established here are the NORAD and ADCOM headquarters. In the 1960s, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, Pike Peak Community College along with the Colorado Technical University were all founded here.

Attractions

​The City of Colorado Springs is an acclaimed tourist destination in this area of the US. In fact, it is numbered as one of the earliest resort destinations in the country. Its strategic location close to the Pike Peak Mountain, and the more famous Rocky Mountains, has being able to lure numerous crowds of tourists on a yearly basis. It is a top cultural hot spot in the state of Colorado too, and boasts of a varied selection of world class museums, parks, performing arts centers to name but a few. Colorado Springs is also home to one of the 3 national Olympics facilities in the United States.

​The United Air Force Academy is nationally renowned for its magnificent chapel. This imposing structure is one of the most prominent landmarks in the city, and it juts 150 feet towards the skyline. Essentially, this happens to be an all faith house of worship for the Air Force cadets who are trained in this military facility. It is noteworthy to state that this aluminum, steel and glass structure comes with an impressive 17 spires, and its construction cost $3.5 million. The pipe organs, liturgical fittings and furnishings of this one of a kind house of worship were obtained from individuals and organizations. Some were obtained from annual Easter donations from other Air Force bases in the nation. Quite recently CNN ranked the chapel as ‘one of the most epic churches in the United States.

This is a registered national natural landmark, which is numbered among the top Colorado Springs attractions. The Garden of Gods Park, is characterized with towering sandstone rock formations that are set in a mesmerizing background of the snow capped Pikes Peak Mountain. It comes complete with a nature center together with a museum. The last of which is noted for showcasing state of art interactive exhibits, which are focused on this marvelous natural phenomenon. Those who pay a visit here get to discover just how the fascinating red rocks were formed. Other highlights include taking part in a variety of outdoor recreational activities including Front Range climbing, bike trails, hiking trails and Jeep and Segway tours.

​Opened in 1979, the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame & Museum of the American Cowboy serves as an educational museum, which preserves the rich legacy of the cowboy competitions of the American ‘Wild Wide West.’ To this end, it offers exhibitions that showcase the rodeo, its eventful history and its overall significance to the West’s cultural heritage. As a rodeo Hall of Fame, it recognizes pasts champions of these contests and even the present ones as well. 


​Rock Mountain Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame

​Rock Mountain Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame 

​This is an interesting museum, which was first opened in 1992, and is supported by the public. Unlike most other museums of this nature, the Rock Mountain Motorcycle Museum places a strong emphasis on people as opposed to relics. These are the notable figures who pioneered this ‘2-wheeled’ innovation in America. Visitors get to explore exhibits that feature photos and detailed biographies of these pioneers. Besides this, the museum showcases over 50 original and restored motorcycles, some of which date back to the early 20th century. This includes brands such as Harley Davidson, Mustang, Indians, Panther, Tornax, Matchless, Honda, Triumph and the list goes on and on.

​The May Natural History Museum is yet another popular Colorado Springs attraction. At the moment, it is home to more than 7,000 species of butterflies, spiders, moths, centipedes, scorpions and plenty more other curious bugs. Around the city, this establishment is fondly referred to as the ‘Bugs Museum,’ and can be a fascinating place to visit if you are a bug’s enthusiast or curiously disposed. It was founded by John May whose father, James, toured the globe and managed to collect more than 100,000 specimens of insects, bugs and other crawling creatures. This simplistic giant roadside beetle and RV Park almost always give a very wrong first impression of the museum. This is particularly so, when it comes to the world class quality of the exhibits, which are showcased here. These bug specimens are in very good condition and meticulously displayed. Some of the places James May traveled to obtain these specimens include Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia and even Papua New Guinea.

​A visit to this city in the state of Colorado is never complete without touring the Cheyenne Mountain State Park. Generally speaking, this can aptly be called an outdoor recreational activities’ paradise. The park comes with a number of trails including those for hiking and biking, which draw big crowds all through the year. There is a campground as well,  that comprises of 51 full service campsites and 10 basic walk in tent sites, which are very popular with families. On the other hand, the Cheyenne Mountain State Park comes complete with an archer’s range that boasts of shooting lines that feature targets positioned at various distances. This incredible state park also makes it a point to hold a number of lifestyle and educational programs such as environmental and yoga classes.

​Yet another curious and rather unusual Colorado Springs attraction is the Museum of Colorado Prisons. This museum is situated at the original site of a historic Colorado cell house, which was the very first women’s correctional facility in the state, and built in the early 20th century. The main mission for this ‘strange’ museum is to collect, preserve and interpret the history of Colorado state’s penitentiary system. At the same time, it very often serves as a stinging reminder to visitors that crime does not pay. The Museum of Colorado Prisons is all about showcasing exhibits, which depict the day to day lives of the inmates who were incarcerated here and the staff who watched over them. Visitors get to explore curious exhibits that stretch over 140 years. This Colorado Springs museum was first opened to the public in 1988, and ever since then more than 200,000 visitors have paid it a visit.
